Trekking in Nong Khiaw, Northern Laos (Part 1 – The Jungle)

The highlight of our Loas trip – 2 days 1 night in the jungle of Laos and stay with the hill tribe people. The trekking tour was booked in Luang Prabang with Green Discovery, USD 89 / pax (inclusive private tour guide, meals and home stay) and private mini van USD 85.

5am morning we left to Nong Khiaw from Luang Prabang. The mini van come and pick us up from the guesthouse. The journey takes about 2 hours.

We stop by a little town for breakfast.

After breakfast we continue the drive to Nong Khiaw. Then we change to another mini van that take us to the bottom of the hill.

Then we trek into the jungle.

At some part, we climb up the mountain through waterfall!

The tour guide found a snake at the waterfall and he pull it out and show us. He says that it is a lucky sign when you encounter a snake in the jungle in Laos’s hill tribe believe.

After endless walking and climbing we arrived at our lunch point. A nice flat cozy place next to a small waterfall.

We settle down, take a rest and prepare to have lunch. The guide pluck some fresh banana leafs and wash with drinking water. Then we pour out the food he carried from his house prepared by his mother.

This is the first time I have food this way in the jungle. Food is scarce here and it is not easy to prepare and keep fresh. We have dried pork, fried egg, vegetable, banana and sticky rice.

We wash our hand by the waterfall and put some sanitary lotion and eat lunch with our hands in jungle by the waterfall. Delicious lunch!

After some rest, we continue our trek and we want to reach the hill tribe village before dusk.

After lunch the weather got hot. It is very tiring to walk under the heat. We continue to walk and rest while the guide pause and wait for all of us…

Please continue to part 2 – a stay with the hill tribes people
